Pre-season baler maintenanceis the key to a successful start to the next season

Preparing your baler for the new season is an important step that will help you get started in the new season faster and without wasting time, energy and money on repairs. Careful maintenance of the machine in the off-season prevents many potential problems and extends the life of the equipment.

Cleaning to combat corrosion

Dirt and crop residues on the baler can accumulate moisture, causing rust to form. The first step to preventing corrosion is to thoroughly clean all surfaces of the machine. After washing, it is important to dry the baler to avoid moisture buildup. Also make sure to provide good shelter for your equipment during the off-season, preferably in a garage or а shed.

Checking fastenings and safety

Carefully inspect all bolted connections and tighten them according to the instructions in the manual. This is an important step to prevent play and damage during operation. Check all safety features and lighting – replace or repair faulty parts. These steps will help avoid emergency situations and ensure safe operation in the future.

Lubrication and inspection of moving parts

Be sure to check the guards and couplings for wear and play. Lubricate them according to the instructions. Any damaged protection elements should be replaced to prevent breakdowns during operation and should be done at the end of the season rather than at the beginning of the next. Before lubricating, run the machine for 10 to 20 minutes to warm up the chains and bearings. This will facilitate the penetration of oil and grease into the components and extend their service life.

Oil level and hydraulic system check

Check the oil level in the main gearbox and, if necessary, add or replace it in accordance with the maintenance schedule. Don’t forget to check your hydraulic hoses – they wear out over time due to exposure to sunlight and weather conditions. Inspect hoses for damage and replace them if they are worn out to avoid failures during the season.

Selection system

Check the operation of the selection system. Repair or replace damaged strippers and pick-up teeth. Inspect other components for wear and damage. Check the condition and pressure of the pick-up tires, as well as the lubrication of all pivot points and couplings.

Hopper and knives

Check the operation of the knives and their condition – sharpen or replace if necessary. Lubricate moving parts and bearings as recommended in the manual. Check the operation of the tailgate and lubricate all hinges and bearings to ensure they open and close smoothly.

Belts and rollers

Loosen the belt tension and check the free movement of the rollers and the condition of their bearings. Clean the rollers from accumulated dirt and adjust the scrapers if necessary. After this, increase the belt tension to the required level and check that they are aligned for proper operation. Inspect the belts for damage and repair them if necessary. It is recommended to replace the tie rods every 1000 bales.

Chains and tires

Check the condition of the chains and their lubrication. Chains and sprockets should be inspected for wear and replaced if worn more than 3%. Before storage, tighten the chains and lubricate them. Also check the condition of the tires and adjust their pressure according to the standards. Inspect wheel bearings and perform maintenance as scheduled.

Bale net wrap or twine

Remove the bale net wrap or twine during the off-season. Here you can find recommendations for storing them.

Taking care of your baler during the off-season will not only extend its life, but will also ensure that it is quickly ready for hard work at the start of next season. By carrying out regular maintenance and inspection, you will reduce the risk of breakdowns and save time in the future.
